When she returned to the prefab, Cara cancelled all the meetings with the lambdas she had scheduled for the day. She went to the social services records centre instead. On arrival she spent 5 minutes 25 seconds continuously washing her hands.

Despite Gavin’s insistence that nothing like art existed for lambdas, Cara found a long sequence of drawings amongst their files. They were largely abstract, the majority composed of closely packed spirals that filled the entire sheet. The nearest terrestrial equivalent was Van Gogh’s Starry Night, but the drawings were more spare, monochrome, and suggested no spatial orientation. They were executed in pencil on water-resistant paper. When a lambda appeared in a drawing it was almost entirely a head with no facial features, and it was difficult to distinguish from the mass of whorls.
